Business Insurance Basics
Insurance terminology can make business coverage harder to understand than it needs to be. These are some of the concepts business owners commonly encounter when reviewing coverage.
General Liability
Helps protect a business from certain third-party claims involving bodily injury, property damage, and other covered liability exposures.
Commercial Property
Helps protect buildings, business personal property, equipment, inventory, and other covered property from insured causes of loss.
Replacement Cost vs. Actual Cash Value
Replacement Cost generally values covered property without deducting for depreciation, while Actual Cash Value generally considers depreciation when determining value. Policy terms and conditions apply.
Certificate of Insurance
A Certificate of Insurance provides evidence of insurance at a specific point in time. It does not replace the insurance policy or automatically change the coverage provided by that policy.
Business Income
Business Income coverage may help replace certain lost income and continuing expenses when covered property damage interrupts normal operations.
Commercial Umbrella / Excess Liability
Provides additional liability limits above certain underlying policies, subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions, and underlying coverage requirements of the policy.
